Indoor Hydroponics Plant

Whether you are looking at rising food costs nervously or you just have a love for fresh vegetables that were grown without pesticides or other processing, you might want to consider hydroponics to maximize your container gardening efforts.  More and more people, whether they live in the city or the country, are seeing what hydroponics can do for them, and you will find that if you are looking for a way to really get the most out of your space that hydroponics is definitely an option to consider

What is Indoor Hydroponics?

When it comes to container gardening, you might think of dirt and soil with seeds planted in small containers around your home.  But the truth is that soil is actually not necessary for plants to thrive!  Hydroponic growing was discovered back in the 19th century.  Gardening experts realized that plants will absorb the mineral nutrients they need to survive simply through the ions in their water.

Although plants will grow in soil in nature, using soil is not necessary - especially within a controlled environment.  When growing outdoors, soil protects the plants' roots from elements that can hinder growth (excessive sun exposure, hail, wind, or disease).  Within your home or in a greenhouse, plants can be protected from these so the soil is not needed.  In hydroponic gardening, you'll find that you can easily grow your plants in mineral wool, in gravel or in perlite as long as the water in question is rich with nutrients the plants need.  Without the need for soil, hydroponic gardening is ideal for gardening indoors.

Have you ever thought about how much you would love to have a garden, but simply don't have the space at your disposal?  Container gardening, especially if you start using hydroponic growing methods, enables you to bring gardening cleanly and effectively into any limited space that you have.  With this method, you'll find that you can garden anywhere that you have light and that you can enjoy fresh and organic vegetables without ever needing to leave your home.  If you're a city dweller, growing your own fruits and vegetables hydroponically can save time and money.  Hydroponics makes it easy to grow plants in an apartment or if you have a very small yard.

Getting Started

There are about as many ways to grow hydroponic container gardens as there are gardeners!  Just start simple and make changes as necessary in your environment.  One way to get started easily is the wick method, in which you will insert one end of a wick into a solution that has the nutrients that your plants need, while the other end of the wick is put into the growing medium, where your plants are located.

There are plenty of different ways to set this up, and there are lots of plans online, so check them out!  You can also buy hydroponic growing mechanisms that are easy to set up and come with instructions on how to get started, how to mix your nutrient/water solution, and ideas about planting certain plants or foods.

With hydroponics, your container gardening efforts will become easier and the plants and foods you grow will be more delightful than ever. Consider this alternative method to grow more in your limited space.
