Highway Driving

There has been a lot of talks and actions to get our environment greener. Initiatives such as eating local food, earth hour, using less plastic bags are quite useful to protect our mother earth. Recently, the efforts have expanded to our roads.

The best way to be environmental friendly is walking, cycling, and using public transit. However, it is not always easy and feasible.  Recently, David Suzuki Foundation's Quebec office learned with its Drive Smart a few tips on how to reduce gas consumption by as much as 20 per cent with a few eco-driving tips. Here are the top tips for all environmental friendly drivers:

Tip # 1: Plan Your Trip

One of the first things you can do is to plan ahead so that you do not drive out on separate trips to get to work and shop. How far do you need to drive to work? It would be helpful if you can drive a short distance to work. Car-pooling to work or visit is an ideal way to go greener. There are forums and websites for sharing a drive.

Tip # 2: Change Your Driving Habits

You do not like the rush hour, but everyone drives to work. Why not try to arrange a flexible work hour so that you can start early and finish early. This way, you get to where you want to go more quickly and consume less gas. Slowing down on your speed will also help since exceeding the speed limit is actually costing you more gas.

Tip # 3: Lighten Your Vehicle

Do you really need three cases of packed bottled water in your trunk? Less weight will help you save gas. If you do not need to carry the weight every day by your car, why not remove it so it drives better for the environment.

There are many ways to save the environment. What are your ideas?
