 Washing Machine

As you shop for a new washing machine, there are many things to consider.  First of all, washing machines have evolved a great deal over the years.  They are quieter, easier to operate, and can clean clothes very well without harming most garments.  But more and more homeowners are opting for the front-loading washing machine nowadays.  Why, you might ask?  Well, the front-loading machine has many of the features consumers want in a washing machine.  But before you rush out and buy one, consider these details about both types.

Efficiency

Probably the number one reason to choose a front-loading machine is to improve energy efficiency in your home.  While the top-loading unit must use enough water to cover all the garments in a load, the front-loading unit only needs about 1/3 of the usual amount due to the way it is structured.  The water is simply sprayed onto the clothing as the tub spins.

Also, the front-loading unit has a much faster, stronger spin cycle that can reach up to 1,000 RPM.  This helps remove more water from the garments; therefore, drying time is greatly reduced.  Another feature that makes the front-loading unit more efficient is the fact that you can wash larger loads safely every time.

Longer-Lasting Clothes

You can keep your clothes in great shape longer by opting for a front-loading machine.  It uses gravity for the washing process whereas a top-loading machine uses an agitator for the rinse cycle.  Agitators tend to be hard on clothing and cause them to wear out more quickly.  Also, consider how it can help preserve towels and bedding items longer.

Positioning and Space

If positioning is a concern for you due to a bad back and difficulty bending over, then stay with the top-loading machine.  You'll do a lot of bending with the front-load option.  If you're concerned with how much space will be used, or if you have very limited space, then opt for the front-loading unit.  These can be stacked with a matching dryer for several brands so you'll only need the width for one unit while being able to use both!

Limitations for Front-Loading Units

Keep in mind there are a few limitations for the front-load option.  Due to an automatic door locking system, these cannot be re-opened to toss in last-minute articles once the washing cycle has begun.  With the top-loading unit, this can easily be done by flipping the lid.  Many front-loading machines require that you use a special type of detergent, such as an HE type with low suds production.

Washing Machine Costs

The price of a washing machine often determines which product or brand a consumer buys.  While front-loading machines offer many long-term benefits, they are still the more expensive option.  These are priced from $500 up whereas top-loading machines can easily be purchased for $200 to $400.  This is a disadvantage for buyers who are on a limited budget.  But the good news is there are plenty of great brands for both models.  And since front-loading units have been around a while now, you can find used ones for much less.

Consider these features and choose the washing machine that will fit your needs and budget.
