Your home should be a safe haven for your family. But with so much crime these days, the only way to feel truly safe is to install a home security system. Maybe you've been thinking about securing your home with an alarm system, but you're not sure how or where to start. These tips can point you in the right direction.
Research Various Systems
Home security systems come in many shapes and sizes, from elaborate setups with 24/7 monitoring services to simple noise-makers and motion lights to frighten away intruders. First consider how much you are able to afford as the prices will vary. Do you want a one-time installation or a monthly service? Do you want an alarm system you can install yourself, or would you rather leave that to the experts?
Other things to consider include how many windows/doors you'll need to secure, the distance of coverage for your alarm system, whether you want a wired or wireless security system, where and how to install the motion sensors, and how many control access panels you'll need as well as where to locate them.
Things that May Affect Your Security System
If you have large pets roaming around indoors or outdoors, they may get in the way of motion sensors. If one or more family members come in late at night, this should be considered as well. Many alarm systems can be controlled from the inside as well, allowing people to move around freely on the inside while the alarm system is on. Make sure the alarm can be turned off by the person entering when the outside entry door is opened. If you have small children, be sure to install your keypads where they can't reach them. Proper preparation can help prevent false alarms in the future.
Contact an Installer
If you're not sure which security company to contact, ask around to see if any friends or relatives can recommend someone. If not, go with the most reputable company in your city. Use Better Business Bureau as a starting point. Sometimes local cable companies offer security systems as well. Once you contact the security company, ask for information and pricing for several types of security systems so you can compare. The company will likely send a representative to your home to help you determine the best system for your needs. Be careful not to overdo it. They'll want to sell you the biggest, best and most expensive system being offered, but this might be more than you need for your home.
You'll want a security system that's user friendly for all members of your family, requiring the least bit of maintenance, and one that is compatible with any other sensors in your home (fire sensors, water detectors, carbon monoxide sensors, etc.). Be sure to ask if panic buttons can be included in case an intruder does reach the inside of your home or if you need an ambulance for a medical emergency.
Read the security contract thoroughly to be sure you understand all terms before signing. By choosing your home security system carefully, you'll have peace of mind for your family at a price you can afford!
