 Home Theatre

If you want a long-lasting, affordable way to provide fun entertainment for your family, consider building a home theatre.  Home theatres are popular because they make it easy to sit back, relax and enjoy a great movie or even music with your family or guests without visiting an overcrowded theatre.  Your home theatre can be designed to create a similar look and feel as a cinema but on a much smaller scale.

Create a Home Theatre Budget

Before adding a home theatre, consider how much you can spend as well as the most important features you'd like to add.  What type of entertainment display and sound system do you want?  Do you already have the home theatre equipment or will you need to budget for this?  Will you hire a professional home theatre designer (specialist) or a general contractor that happens to know a little about home theatres?  These are important questions to ask before starting any major home improvement project.

Factors to Affect Your Home Theatre

Believe it or not, there are quite a few factors that will affect the look, feel and functionality of your home theatre.  One is the size and shape of the room.  Is it a small square room or a long, large rectangular room?  Does the room have proper lighting that won't interfere with the video display system?  What about the acoustical aspects of the room?  Some rooms tend to allow sound to flow freely while others give an echo.  If the walls are very thin, the sounds from your home theatre could possibly bother others in the house or even your next door neighbors.

Home theatre rooms need proper ventilation for those who will use the room as well as for the equipment.  There shouldn't be excessive moisture in the air; this can sometimes be an issue if turning a basement, attic or garage into a home theatre.  Other considerations include the seating arrangement of those using the room and location of the home theatre components.

Electrical Woes

The last thing you want is for your family entertainment room to be an electrical hazard.  Be sure the electrical outlets are sufficient to handle the equipment you plan to use.  If not, have an electrician install proper outlets.  Avoid using drop/extension cords, and use a safe power bar with lightening/surge protection.  Also consider cable organizers and protectors to keep all the cables neatly hidden away from your guests' eyesight as well as any small children or pets.

Simplify the Process

Do you want your home theatre finished quickly?  Consider buying a home theatre-in-a-box.  These are ready made with speakers, surround sound receiver and even DVD and CD players.  Although these might not be custom made, they are affordable and will help you get started if on a tight budget.

When designing your home theatre, be sure to ask the contractor about adding storage cabinets and shelves that will enable you to store all your DVDs/CDs securely.  These can be locked cabinets with combination or key locks.  Consider where the shelves/cabinets will be located and be sure they will blend with the other furnishings in the room.

Once complete, decorate your home theatre room to get the look you'd like to achieve.  With a home theatre, you'll be able to relax at home while cherishing time with your family.
