Granite counter tops add unmatched beauty to any kitchen with their vibrant colors and designs. And with occasional maintenance, you can extend the life of your granite tops for many years of enjoyment. Here are some ways to keep granite looking its best.
Granite Cleaning
Cleaning granite kitchen counter tops is easy and can usually be accomplished with mere soap and water. You should avoid abrasive cleaners. Harmful chemicals can eat away at the sealant and cause your granite tops to be vulnerable to staining. If you're concerned about bacteria, select an all-natural cleaner that is non-abrasive, but one that still features properties to kill common kitchen bacteria from raw meats, raw egg, etc. If you're not sure, check with the manufacturer of your particular type of granite tops to see what is recommended for cleaning.
Do Your Granite Counters Need to be Sealed?
Applying new sealant to your granite tops every five to ten years can keep them looking new and protect your granite from permanent damage or staining. Some granite tops (particularly light-colored) are porous and allow liquids to seep through when there are spills.
Before applying the sealant, you'll need to perform a simple test to determine if sealant is needed. Pour a small amount of water on your counter and notice if it beads up on the granite. If after 20 minutes or so the water has seeped into the granite instead of beading up and caused a water stain, then your granite should definitely be sealed. If water can seep into the granite, then so can other liquids such as tea, Kool-aid, ketchup, grease, etc. These can cause permanent ugly stains if you're not extremely careful! And if you prepare food on your counters or place drinks on them daily....accidents are bound to happen.
Applying the Sealant
Once you've determined that a sealant is needed, buy sealant at a home improvement store. Opt for the more expensive, longer lasting brand if you want to prolong its effectiveness. Some high quality sealants will last up to 10 years! Clean the granite counters well and allow to dry completely before applying the sealant. It can take several hours to dry, and the granite will have a dull look and feel once it's completely dry.
Apply the sealant with a cloth using a circular motion. Start with one edge of your counters and work your way to the other side so you'll be sure to cover the entire counter with sealant. Massage the sealant into the granite well with circular strokes for a thorough application. Once the first coating is complete, wait about 20 minutes and apply a second coat. Don't allow the first coat to dry completely before applying the second coat. You can also apply a third coat, but this is simply a matter of preference. Wait several hours before sitting items on your counter or before wiping or cleaning it. This will allow ample time for the sealant to dry.
Use these simple tips to keep your granite counter tops looking great and to protect your investment!
