If you need to spruce up your bathroom decor, fabric shower curtains provide an array of designs to get the look and feel desired. As you browse local home improvement stores or home decor websites, you'll be amazed at the hundreds of elegant shower curtains available in various fabrics and colors. The patterns and themes are endless...with floral patterns, seashells, fish, butterflies, birds, country/farm settings and numerous other creations.
When buying fabric shower curtains, consider the length of the curtains to ensure they won't drag the floor. Measure the length from your curtain rod to about two or three inches above the floor. This allows room for the curtain to cover the tub or shower basin without touching the floor. Take a measuring tape with you or read the curtain packaging carefully to ensure getting the correct size.
Liner and Curtain Material
Fabric shower curtains should always be accompanied by a liner (either vinyl or some other waterproof material). Some fabric curtains come with a matching liner; others are sold separately. Shower curtains with patterns or certain themes are usually accompanied by a solid color liner. You can easily buy a liner to match your fabric curtain, and this is advisable. A shower curtain liner will protect your fabric curtain from moisture, thus preventing mildew, soap scum, etc. The liner also keeps water from splashing through to the floor, but the fabric curtain alone might not accomplish this.
The material used to make fabric curtains can vary, so look for material that's easy to machine wash and that won't wrinkle easily. A cotton/polyester blend works well, but more elegant styles might be made of silky or sheer materials, or feature lace or fancy accessories. Just be sure that whichever material you choose, the cleaning instructions are included so your shower curtain can be cleaned without damaging the material. Clean your fabric curtains with non-abrasive cleaning solutions, such as clothes detergent without bleach. You may add a little bleach when cleaning your liner if it has a lot of soap residue. Use spray products to prevent soap build-up between showering.
Hanging Fabric Shower Curtains
Once you've made a purchase, you're probably excited to get home and see how your new curtains will look. On the shower curtain rings, install the liner first with the shiny side facing inward toward the inside of the bath tub or shower. Then install the fabric shower curtain on the same rings. The fabric curtain should hang on the outside of your tub and the liner should be kept inside to act as a seal to prevent water from splashing onto the walls and floor while bathing.
Complement your fabric shower curtains with other decor items such as matching window curtains or shades, bath rugs, hand towels, sink accessories and lovely wall paintings. Use fabric shower curtains to create any look and feel you want!
