 Lake Fishing

Lake fishing takes a certain amount of skill and a lot of luck.  If you're a first timer to lake fishing, you're probably excited about the possibility of a "big catch" or at least many "small catches."  Well any experienced angler will tell you to be prepared for good days and bad days.  Enjoy the act of fishing even if you don't catch many on certain days.  Here are some tips to make the learning process a little easier.

Choose the Lake Wisely

It's important to make sure the lake you choose has plenty of fish.  If not, you'll only be wasting your time.  Some lakes have limitations as to how many fish you can catch per day (e.g. limit to 2 bass and 10 crappie per day).  They do this to prevent a rapid depletion of the fish population.  You can check with local wildlife and game departments to find out what type of fish are abundant in certain lakes.  This will give you an idea of where to fish and the type of bait to use.  Also, be sure to get a fishing license if required in your area.

Fish Feeding Areas

Fish tend to feed in certain areas at certain times of the day.  And due to their unpredictability, you will never know exactly when and where the fish might be feeding each day.  The good news is there are places in a lake where fish are more likely to be hiding.  Try casting your hook toward shady areas for starters, especially during the heat of the day.  Also, fish near large rocks, lily pads and logs.  If the lake has a cove or neck, try fishing in this area as well.

Alternate Types of Bait

Take various types of bait with you and switch occasionally between live bait (crickets, worms, minnows, etc.) and artificial bait.  This will increase your chances of attracting various types of fish or at least attracting those that are swimming in that particular area.

Cast Into the Deep

For larger fish, cast your hook into the deeper waters (far from the shore).  Smaller fish like to swim around the banks, but most larger fish are out in the deeper parts.  You might have to wait a little longer to catch a larger fish, but it's well worth the wait!

Boating

If fishing on a boat, consider taking multiple fishing poles and using various types of bait.  Cast the lines on different sides of the boat to increase your chances of a catch.  Just make sure your boat doesn't get too close to rocks, logs or other obstacles that can catch your hook.

Use these basic lake fishing tips to get started.  Ask for advice from local fishermen that have been fishing for years.  Most will be happy to share their tips with you.  Take someone with you and make it fun no matter how many fish you catch.
