Home Office Desk

When starting a small business in your home, it's crucial to set up a functional, professional home office to meet your daily demands.  Your home office should be no different than a regular office.  It should be comfortable physically and provide easy access to all supplies and equipment as you perform daily tasks.  Here are some home office setup tips to get started.

Choose a Private Area

Whether your office will be in the corner of a room or in a room of its own, select an area where you can have absolute privacy throughout the work day.  You'll need complete quiet so you can concentrate and achieve daily goals.  This is especially important if you generally work on a tight deadline for clients.  Interruptions can hinder your progress.  Don't choose a room where family members will be passing through or where you can hear noises such as television, radio, others' conversations, etc.

Choose Home Office Furniture and Equipment Wisely

Don't just go for the cheapest office furniture.  Choose affordable furniture that will help you accomplish the most amount of work in a healthy manner.  Look for an office chair and desk that work well for your height and size.  You should be able to sit comfortably with ample support for your arms and back.  If you lack arm support on your desk, find a chair with adjustable arm rests.

The same goes for equipment....cheaper is not always better.  Buy high quality office equipment that will last many years.  Some items you'll likely need:  computer/monitor, mouse, keyboard, fax machine, printer, office phone and filing cabinets.  Other supplies include notepads, file folders, pens/pencils, desk lamp and foot rest (for good foot support).  Consider buying cable organizers to protect and organize all the cables going to and from your equipment.  Cable covers can protect your cables from pets as well as protect your small children from risk of electric shock.

Windows and Lighting

Set up your home office in an area where there won't be trouble with lighting and glare.  At certain times of the day, the sun can shine very brightly through windows in your home.  If you do experience this problem, consider purchasing curtains that will block the sun's rays (commonly used by third shift workers).  This enables you to control sunlight and glare throughout the day.

Lastly, arrange your equipment and supplies with frequency of use in mind.  If you seldom use your fax machine, for instance, then you don't have to keep it nearby.  Place your phone within easy reach if you receive many calls.  Buy a supply caddy to keep all your small items organized on your desk, such as pens, markers, hole puncher, stapler, paperclips, letter opener, etc.

With the right home office setup, your work day will go much smoother and you'll be able to accomplish every goal with ease.  Keep these tips in mind for home office success!
