Meeting perfect strangers can be somewhat awkward, whether on the job, at parties, on a blind date, or elsewhere. Perhaps you're about to meet a new potential client or the big boss in your company for the first time. Maybe your friend is setting you up on a blind date, and you're not sure what to say. Don't worry! It's easier than you think to break the ice with strangers and even start interesting conversations. Here are some tips to help you get over the initial anxiety.
Ask Questions
A great way to start a conversation is to ask questions. Become genuinely concerned with the person, and listen more than you talk. Listening more will make the other party feel you are truly interested in what they have to say. It builds confidence for the other person without saying a word!
Talk About Positive Subjects
The first meeting is not the time to bring up life or family problems. Bring up positive subjects such as favorite movies or music, current job, sports, likes and interests. This is a good way to engage in conversation without getting too personal.
At Company Meetings
Breaking the ice at company meetings can be achieved by introductions and then having a brief conversation about the goals that are to be reached during the meeting. Past experiences pertaining to the company or clients can also be shared as attendees get to know one another. Business meetings can be somewhat fun and personal at times, but this really depends on the nature of the meeting.
Blind Dates
On a blind date, talk about interests and likes. Be positive, and avoid talking about past relationships (ex-girlfriend or boyfriend or a past divorce). Make the conversation fun and light-hearted on the first date while getting to know one another at a slow pace.
At Family Gatherings or Parties
Parties are great for meeting new people or even meeting some long distance family members for the first time. One of the best ways to break the ice at parties is to play group games. Games are designed to help guests get to know one another, become familiar with names, and have fun. Search the Web for ice breaker games and instructions if you'll be hosting a party soon.
Meeting strangers might be a bit unnerving, but it's the only way to find new friends or create unity within large companies or organizations. Use these tips to easily break the ice!
