Shopping

Shopping trends are changing due to the poor economy, and this could have long term effects on how people perceive and buy products.  If you are like the average consumer today and trying to find ways to buy more for less, then the following habit-changing ideas can help you glean the most from every shopping experience.

Everyday Spending Trends

The spending habits of consumers over the past few decades have trended towards indulgence and impulse buying.  A consumer would often arrive at a place of business, see a product he wants, and then buy that product without a second thought.  This trend has quickly faded in the past several years since many buyers are becoming more money conscious.  Instead of impulse buying, shoppers are more adapt to plan their shopping trips and budget their spending in advance.  This has caused companies around the world to re-think their marketing plans and how they price and package products.

Here are some ways to change your normal shopping habits to enjoy savings you never thought  imaginable.  Look for bargains in local newspapers, online or in printed sales papers.  Use coupons whenever possible, but only on items you need.  Make it a point to write out a list before every shopping trip and estimate your costs.  If you normally do the grocery shopping for your family, then you will likely know the usual price of certain goods.  Use this knowledge to budget your grocery spending before you go.

Another way to save money is to buy in bulk when items are on sale.  Frozen goods, canned goods and commodities such as toilet paper, paper towels, detergent, etc. can all be stored for keeps.  Even meats can be kept frozen for several months.  If you find these items for 15 to 50 percent less than the usual retail price, then be sure and stock up for a rainy day!

Use Discretion While Shopping

Get to know the area you live in and what stores offer the best deals on clothing, car fuel, appliances, lawn care and home decor items.  Become a street-wise shopper and avoid paying more just for brand names.  Sure, some brands do last longer than others, so you'll need to research and find out which ones are worth the added cost.  But you'll also find that some items cost less but actually offer better quality.  And don't forget to visit local yard and garage sales, thrift stores and flea markets.  You can often find brand name items at dirt cheap prices.  When shopping online, do a quick check at several Internet stores to compare pricing before you buy.

Big Purchases

Even the shopping habits for huge purchases such as automobiles and real estate have changed dramatically in recent years.  Many sellers are in desperate mode, and buyers know this to be true when they begin shopping around for a car or home.  Buyers are eager to make ridiculously low offers because they know there's a chance the seller will take it!  If you're planning to buy a home, consider the current market and what houses are selling for in the area.  Are they selling for well below the appraised value?  If so, you might be able to make an amazingly low offer and save thousands of dollars on your home purchase.  Also, don't be afraid to ask about owner financing if you have less than perfect credit.  Car sales have been down over the past few years as well, so the same principals apply.  Don't allow a salesperson to intimidate you...the ball's in your court.  Make an offer and stick to your guns.  There are plenty of auto dealerships that will welcome your business-and your low offer.

Beware of Prosperity

A short season of prosperity tends to cause some shoppers to let up their guard when it comes to spending habits.  You might have a good month or two and decide to spend a little extra on items you don't really need.  Then before you realize it, another tough economical time arrives, and you wish you would have saved the "extra!"  Everyone falls into this financial trap from time to time.  The idea is to always be thrifty and money conscious...whether finances are doing well or poorly.

Use these ideas to develop healthy spending habits that will enable your family to save money and work towards a future goal!
