Cell phone ban while driving

WINNIPEG: Manitoba drivers are facing some new rules as of today.

Talking on a handheld phone while driving, or smoking while kids are in the car, can get you a fine of $199.80.

The province first promised the law in 2008, but Transportation Minister Steve Ashton says it was important to let everyone get used to the new rules before enforcement began.

He says the law is aimed at protecting people from distracted drivers, and protecting kids from second-hand smoke.

Most other provinces have already adopted the rules.
