Missing Millions of Dollars

WINNIPEG: A Winnipeg radio station is reporting that police are investigating the alleged theft of upwards of $2 million from an automated teller machine at a city hospital.

The station (CJOB) says the money disappeared from an ATM at the Misericordia Health Centre over a 10-year period and that the problem was only discovered last winter.

The report says an external forensic audit confirms the loss of money from the machine, which was operated by the hospital until this spring.

It also says a fired employee who was in charge of the ATM is under police investigation.

Heidi Klaschka, a spokeswoman for the Misericordia, says the ATM is now operated by a ``third-party'' firm.

Klaschka says the hospital has insurance, but it's unclear whether it covers all of the missing money.
