Vanguard Law Group LLP uses Tablet Computer to Conduct Canada’s First “Green" Mortgage Signing


Mississauga, Ontario - Friday February 5, 2010 - Vanguard Law Group LLP today became the first real estate law firm in Canada to conduct an entirely paperless mortgage signing. The event occurred at the home of a client/borrower assuming a refinance mortgage from a leading Canadian lender. Instead of the borrower being presented with paper, the borrower was handed a tablet computer which displayed an electronic version of the usual refinance mortgage documentation. The borrower used a stylus to electronically “sign” their signature directly on to the tablet computer itself after having reviewed the documentation on the screen. The digitally signed documents were then immediately saved in a secure fashion on the tablet and uploaded to a secure website for processing by the firm.

“This is a milestone event” said Sanjay Soni, Managing Partner of Vanguard, “it will not only save our firm time and money; more importantly it will do something positive for the environment as well as our clients. Law firms generally have been heavy users of paper and we at Vanguard are out to change this. This signing alone saved 132 pages of paper.”

The electronic signing also resulted in a significant reduction in loan turn around time. The signed paper documents no longer had to be taken to a fax machine to be sent back to Vanguard’s office for processing. At the conclusion of the signing the client/borrower was issued a USB data stick which contained an electronic copy of the executed documents for their records.
